Exactitudes is a series of portraits attempting to provide an “anthropological record of people’s attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity.” It’s pretty amazing.
Having spent half my life as a full-blooded, fishnet, trenchcoat and knee-high boots wearing Goth, I can relate to the struggle for individuality through dress. It wasn’t until years later that I recognized the irony of it all… eg. I looked like every other Goth on the street. I wasn’t being an individual so much as subscribing to a group that satisfied my desire to rebel. I could easily have been a hippy or a punk or a skater I guess. The strange thing is that I always thought I was being “myself,” unique and truly individual… Still, the boots kicked ass and it was fun getting all the weird/surprised/disgusted looks from “normal people”. It was enough to make me feel like I was giving the finger to the rest of the world. I’m just glad I escaped my Goth identity’s hooks, I’m a happier person for it.
